Emily Dickinson was a quiet, private person. Only one photo was taken of her in her lifetime at a young age. My mother recreated her dress housed in the Emily Dickinson museum for my model. I wanted to portray her in a natural element in which she thrived artistically. In one of her poems she eludes to the cherry blossoms that fell like snow. In the portrayal that I did of her she is seated on a marble bench brushing away the blossoms to reveal the first line of her poem etched into the granite.
The Snow that never drifts —
The transient, fragrant snow
That comes a single time a Year
Is softly driving now —
So thorough in the Tree
At night beneath the star
That it was February’s Foot
Experience would swear —
Like Winter as a Face
We stern and former knew
Repaired of all but Loneliness
By Nature’s Alibi —
Were every storm so spice
The Value could not be —
